Dressed to Keel is one of those hybrid Romance/Mystery books in which the main character splits her time swooning over some dreamy man and solving a mystery. I must confess that I am not a romance reader and these books are not my thing. If you like them, though, I think this one is probably good.
This book is set on a cruise ship where Darcy Cavanaugh has accompanied a friend working as a nurse on the cruise. Darcy is mending a broken heart and re-evaluating her career choice as a nurse after a particularly traumatic case. She and her buddy Marie quickly become embroiled in a rash of jewel thefts taking place onboard and need to investigate to clear Marie’s name when a fellow passenger accuses her of the thefts.
This book has a fun setting, interesting characters, a sense of humor (the cow socks and lingerie animals are hysterical), some action, and the bones of a good mystery. But the mystery lover in me complains that too much time is devoted to the romance to really flesh out the mystery. If the author doesn’t take the time to develop more than two suspects, it becomes obvious who did it, you know?
This appears to be Candy Calvert’s first book, and while the genre isn’t my favorite, the creativity and skills are obviously there. I will be interested to see what her second book is like and I would recommend this book to those readers on the Romance end of the mystery spectrum.
Did I guess it? Yes, no problem. Will I read more? One more – mostly to see if she moves away from the kissy-face stuff.
